I am Mid Sized (But What Does That Really Mean?)

Updated: Aug 12, 2021

So I am claiming to be mid sized but what does that really mean?

It's definitely a newer term; one that I came across maybe in the last two years. Before then my feed was predominantly filled with standard size 6-8 women and honestly seeing only thin-framed women on my feed was not great for my self confidence. I would occasionally do the odd search on Instagram and even Pinterest for plus-size fashion inspiration, but the results always came back with the women who were around a size 22 or larger, which again, did not represent my body.

Somewhere over the last couple of years though, the term "mid size" started popping up. I honestly can't remember when I first heard the term, but when I did, I eagerly searched related hashtags to see if the rumours were true. On that fateful day, I did manage to find a couple of mid sized women to follow from the small pool of tag participants. Thankfully, since then the term has become popular and the hashtag has generated more and more women that I can relate to with different styles and aesthetics. It makes me excited to be a part of the fashion community at such an important time of representation and acceptance.

There are now many mid size bloggers that I am able to find inspiration from and I have listed these women’s blogs over on my main page. They all gravitate around a similar aesthetic that I appreciate and admire; a neutral and sophisticated style.

I read a couple of articles relating to the new movement of mid size bloggers. This one from Vogue and Grazia were a great read and they brought up the realisation that this movement was one created by the people. We weren't represented by the fashion industry and so we had to make a noise and make a space for ourselves. It actually seems so crazy that we weren't represented sooner considering that the majority of women fall between a size 10 and 16; the size range of mid size women.

The article from Grazia also resonated with me in the fact that sometimes we feel like we can't really speak up about feeling under represented because at the end of the day, we can generally walk into a traditional clothing store and find our sizes.

However, as they say in a similar article by Cosmopolitan, often the grading of the sizes are so skewed and they dont take into account that proportions change when you go up in sizes. So often the size 14 and 16 don't fit… so yes, our sizes are available in most stores, but they most likely won't fit anyway.

I am just so relieved to find a growing community of mid size women, and to finally feel a sense of validity and representation, where it was for so long an area of sizing that was ignored. So here's to the mid size women, rocking their amazing, curvy figures and feeling bloody fantastic!
