How would we see ourselves if we looked through the eyes of a loved one? A short fashion film by Julz Elizabeth.
I had come across the beautiful seasonal campaign films from Zimmerman and I was drawn to the simplistic, almost raw feel to the videos. They appeared to be filmed rather organically; and I know they would have been highly curated and edited but that's why I love how they feel just so effortless! I found a couple of other examples with the 2018 Cruise Collection Campaign by Chanel and also a fashion film Atelier Blanche by Vivienne and Tamas.
I set out to make my own version of these films but instead by portraying the energy and love through the eyes of my five year old daughter and the sense of confidence that is gained when you see yourself through your child's eyes.
I literally just advised my daughter to film me as she wanted to, and so we walked around our backyard and through the house. I also added in some of my own shots and together we created our little fashion film.
The editing was probably the hardest part and that was not because of the difficulty or technicality of it but because I was doing my best to not be critical of myself. I had to move past the personal judgement and this was incredibly difficult to do, despite the progress that I have made in my self confidence. It puts you in a vulnerable position to have someone else be in charge of the camera and the angles and you not being able to control how you look.
But that's ok. This is a journey, not a destination, as they say. It does make me sad that we judge ourselves so much when usually the people who watch us do life, see us through eyes of love and admiration and they don't care what we look like.
How freeing is that thought!
